Second Home – Kunstgenuss in Cork

Ich bin in Cork und genieße es sehr, diese schöne Stadt wiederzusehen.

Auf dem Programm steht in erster Linie Kunst- und Kulturgenuss aller Art und so möchte ich euch eine kleine und thematisch passende Entdeckung aus der Crawford Art Gallerie Cork nicht vorenthalten.

Auf ihrer Homepage schreibt die Crawford Art Gallery Cork über dieses Bild:

“Both The Goose Girl (1888) and its companion painting Retrospect (1887) [private collection] show Edith’s absorption of French Peasant Realism, and could easily be Salon paintings of the 1880s. Although coming from a privileged background herself, Edith had an interest in and sympathy for the lives of the villagers and country people of West Cork. The child, with her dark eyes and hair and her ragged barefoot attire, resembles the Italian models who were favoured by French artists in this period. In fact, it is a local girl, Mary Ann, who poses for the artist, and Edith acquired the white goose for three shillings. With its superb still-life detail, gleaming copper vessels, cabbage and string of onions, The Goose Girl is one of Edith Somerville’s finest early paintings.”

In der Ausstellung selbst wird das Bild darüber hinaus wie folgt interpretiert:

“Mary Ann, a local West Cork girl, clings to a favoured goose destined for a future meal. The painting reflects the injustice often felt in youth about adult decisions.”

Diese Interpretation erschien mir nicht nur schön klar formuliert sondern auch besonders bewegend und zeitlos relevant.

Ich habe es auch sehr genossen, dass in der ganzen Ausstellung neben den Bildern immer auch einige Hintergrundinformationen zu den Künster*innen, Kunstwerken und dargestellten Personen sowie Interpretationsansätze angeboten wurden!

The Goose Girl von Edith Anna Œnone Somerville ist derzeit im Rahmen der Ausstellung Heroes and Villains in der Crawford Art Gallery Cork zu sehen.
